3C-AAL (cn 347003) Sneaky taken through the cockpit window of TMKs Twin Otter 9Q-CEL. The c/n is slightly visible on the tailroot. As in the case of many other Antonovs, the crew came with it from the former Soviet Union to earn some money in Africa. |

9Q-CUB (cn 790325) Seven or eight L410s are based at Goma, like this Uniform Bravo. The type appears to be very useful for Congolese airstrips. The airport authorities -RVA- were so kind to take me in a jeep and drive along the flightline. This one is made during that ride. |

9Q-CXZ (cn 841201) 'Anyone a mandazi?' the boy on the left asks the mechanics (mandazi=doughnut-like fried bread). The guys are tired, they have have been testing the engines of the plane the whole afternoon. A week before 9Q-CBQ of the same airline crashed at the airstrip of Walikale, during an emergency landing after an engine failure. The black in the back is petrified lava, not tarmac. |

9Q-CBD (cn 48018/995) 'Bad Dog' -as the crew calls this machine- just before take off. An Ugandese construction company built a new taxiway between the runway and the ramp. Boarding an airliner on the runway of Goma soon will be a matter of the past. |

When you fly from Butembo to Goma (North-Kivu), you fly along Nyiragongo, an active vulcano at about 18 kms from Goma's city centre. The next thing you see is the airport. The black rocks once were lava that ran over the runway and destroyed the city's centre. In the background Lake Kivu and the hills of Rwanda. |

ER-AXI (cn 6344310) In the Western world, it would be headlines news: people walking over a runway. In some African countries, it is the most common thing. More common than sitting next to a runway with a 400mm telelens. Thanks to the people of the RVA -Airport Authorities- noone was bothering me, making this shot. |

9Q-CDM (cn 18919/163) 'Bibi yake' is the name of this ship, 'his wife' in Congolese Swahili. In Tanzania it would mean 'his grandma', which probably is more appropriate now, because Bibi won't fly anymore. Engine #3 serves as beehive, while soldiers frequently sit on the main gear when it rains. According to the chief air traffic controller Bibi was one of the 3 airliners that were hijacked by rebels in 1997, to launch an attack in Western Congo. |

9Q-CEL (cn 719) TMK's Twin is the only one that lands every now and then on the 18. The vulcano Nyiragongo makes these approaches by bigger and less agile machines impossible. Here, Echo Lime just arrived from the 36 direction. In the background a trio Antonovs: An-8, An-12 and An-32. |

9Q-CLV (cn 45610/122) Stuck at the ramp of GOM for almost five years, when this pic was taken. Lava overran the only taxiway, so the DC-8 couldn't leave anymore. In the beginning, they let the engines run daily, but at some point in time, this one became wfu. In the foreground the new taxiway to the ramp, but that one is too late for Lima Victor.. |

ER-AXI (cn 6344310) This one is frequently at GOM, but can also be seen at airports like Lumumbashi and Entebbe in Uganda. With full throttle and full breaks the machine is ready to go. Taken with 28mm.. |

9Q-CVT (cn 48127/961) Bravo's DC-9s look like new, but they are all pretty aged. The five DC-9s of the company have c/ns 48125 till 48129. And Laura is the middle one. A bit more than three months before '-CVT' was still in use by an Antonov 12 of Mango Airlines, but that one crashed in July of 2006. Amazing that the registration is reused so quickly. |

An overview of FZNA. The ramps on the left and in front of the terminal are in use by UN/MONUC forces with their Mi-24/-8 choppers. The light coloured taxiway is new and forces the Mils to be displaced to the platform behind the flightline in order to clear the platform for jetliners. In the background you can see the runway of Gisenyi, Rwanda. |

Goma's flightline on an average day. An-12s 9Q-CVM and 3C-AAL are parked at the left end of the runway, 9Q-CBD of CAA is parked at the new taxiway. A few L410s are parked right next to the runway as An-12 S9-PSK, a Dash 8 of ECHO Flight and an An-32. |
