G-AOXL (cn 14062) Croydon Airport was once the main airport for London, before being replaced by Northolt, Heathrow and Gatwick. The airport opened here in March-1920 and became the base of the famous Imperial Airways. The first purpose-built airport terminal building was constructed here, adjacent to the Aerodrome Hotel. Unfortunately the airport was closed in the late 1950s, with the DH Heron (G-AOXL) flying the final passenger service from here on 30-Sep-1959. This is actually G-ANUO, painted to represent that last day. |
