Where once the Viscounts came to train... Originally an RAAF base, Mangalore was developed after the Second World War as a diversion aerodrome for when Melbourne/Essendon was fogged in, its location north of the Great Dividing Range giving it good weather when the weather in Melbourne was bad. The field is still much as it was then. The nearest runway is 05/23, the photo looking east toward the township of Avenel. |

VH-RAR (cn FPP1) This Experimental pusher-prop ultra-light aircraft was apparently started with an open throttle at the Mangalore Airshow at Easter 1998. It accelerated into a spectator area, snagging a rope barrier whch caused it to ground loop many times. It knocked over the chairs my sister and I were sitting on, and knocked over a girl before stopping against another aircraft. If it had a tractor prop it could have killed several people it knocked over. We were lucky that day. The aircraft was first Regd on 01Apr1998 |

The field is much as it was then, except the hangars closest in the photo which are of relatively recent construction.
