USA - Navy
Lockheed P-3C Orion
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, March 24, 1993
Remark
Photographer
158924 / LA-5 (cn 285A-5596) Another step on the road to low-viz Orions is illustrated by this one in "halfway" colors and markings; the color scheme and national insignia are old style, but the sqn. markings are low-viz gray. This aircraft is assigned to Patrol Sqn. 5 Mad Foxes at NAS Jacksonville, FL, and their specialty in markings arose from the P-2 Neptune era. A prominently marked magnetic compass panel on the tail, was made to look like a door with the sqn. Fox standing in it, holding a hammer. This shows only the fox's head.

Japan - Air Force
Lockheed C-130H Hercules (L-382)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, January 1987
Remark
Photographer
75-1076 (cn 382-5090) Apparently painted in a version of the TO-1-1-4 so-called Southeast Asia c/s, this C-130 due for delivery to the Japan Air Self Defense Force was one of only a few so colored; most were delivered in the Europe 1 c/s (see 2041313 and 2052480). Acquired by the 401st Hikotai at Komaki, as were the others, '076 was eventually also re-painted in the darker scheme.

USA - Navy
Douglas TA-3B Skywarrior
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 1987
Remark
Photographer
144862 / GD-123 (cn 12108) There's something timeless about the sight of this old Navy attack plane roaring low overhead, trailing smoke into the crystalline sky. Actually a trainer version of the venerable Whale, this was a bit of a dinosaur by now, but all the more welcome for its colorful markings, imposing size, and impressive noise. Part of a mass departure of 3 A-3s, 4 EA-4s, and an EP-3, Golf Delta 123 was blasting on its way back to NAS Key West (VAQ-33 Firebirds) after a hurricane evac. stay at Dobbins.

Convair QF-106A Delta Dart (8)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 2, 1995
Remark
Photographer
59-0105 (cn 8-24-234) Their geometric simplicity giving them a futuristic feel from this angle, a pair of Darts pass over on initial approach to a Dobbins 360 overhead and -11 landing. Both were formerly assigned to the 5th FIS Spittin' Kittens, Minot AFB, ND, and had undergone drone conversion. They now belonged to the 82nd Aerial Target Sqn. at Tyndall AFB, FL.

McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, April 28, 2006
Remark
Photographer
81-0036 / FF (cn 776/C219) Eagle demo!! The 9th Air Force F-15 Demo. Team performs at the Friday practice session for the 2006 NAS Atlanta air show. It is depicted making the full afterburner high-speed pass along the crowd line. Normally assigned to the 71st FS "Ironmen", 1st FW at Langley AFB, VA, this Eagle is finished in the regulation Mod Eagle scheme, and is adorned with the new USAF logo on the tail and a "Let's roll!" decal (commemorating the Sept.11 2001 attacks) on the nose. Sadly, this was NAS Atlanta's last air show...

McDonnell Douglas QF-4G Phantom II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 30, 1998
Remark
Photographer
69-0238 (cn 3760) Five days after arriving at Dobbins, this former Idaho ANG Wild Weasel taxies for a Dobbins 11 departure. The momentary sunlight brings out the "glowing" quality of the International Orange areas against the original Hill II Gray scheme. It was returning to its home at Tyndall AFB, FL, after a hurricane threat had passed.

McDonnell Douglas QF-4G Phantom II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 30, 1998
Remark
Photographer
69-7294 Converted from a straight "E" model Rhino to a Wild Weasel late in life (1989), this former member of the 190th Fighter Sqn., Idaho ANG, Boise Airport, has been further modified in its "afterlife" to a man-capable drone. Seen here taxying for a Dobbins 11 departure, it now serves with the 82nd Aerial Target Sqn. at Tyndall AFB, FL; it stayed at Dobbins with 12 others because of a hurricane threat. It was also a scant 2 months from destruction when the photo was taken... I believe the particularly pugnacious sharkmouth was added during drone conversion.

Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, February 1987
Remark
Photographer
156800 / AD-455 (cn C-067) Another two-seat Corsair approaches Dobbins for a 29 landing, this time with only one pilot aboard. It also wears the standard Tactical Paint Scheme colors and markings and comes from NAS Cecil Field, FL, VA-174 Hell Razors.

USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, February 1987
Remark
Photographer
1***** / AA-210 A Tomcat is seen on approach to Runway 11 in typical landing configuration. Also becoming increasingly typical is the TPS color scheme and dull markings- the only indication of squadron colors is the yellow of the crew's helmets! This and the arrow marking on the tail signifies Fighting 103 Sluggers from NAS Oceana, VA, assigned to Air Wing 17 ("AA") at that time. Call sign was Clubleaf 210.

Remark
Photographer
156746 / AD-464 (cn E-13) Another Friday afternoon, and another round of Navy trainers... This time, a VA-174 Hell Razors Two-Sair approaches Dobbins Rwy 29; this was the Atlantic Fleet Corsair replacement squadron based at Cecil Field, FL. The plane wears the now standard Tactical Paint Scheme with lighter gray markings.

Lockheed EP-3A Orion
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 1987
Remark
Photographer
150529 (cn 185-5055) At first glance, this is just another anonymous Orion from the period when all squadron markings were deleted across the fleet (because of Khadaffi's death threat to VP-56). However, the truncated tail boom suggests something unusual, and this is in fact a heavily modified old A-model used for fleet electronic warfare training. An aircraft of VAQ-33 Firebirds, Golf Delta 130 is climbing away from Dobbins to return to its Key West, FL base after a hurricane evacuation stay.

Northrop F-5E Tiger II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, January 1987
Remark
Photographer
74-1570 / 70 (cn R1266) Aggressor road show! A pair of Tigers from the 64th Aggressor Sqn. (red numbers, 65th blue), 57th Fighter Weapons Wing at Nellis AFB, NV approach Dobbins RWY 29 for a landing after "playtime" with the GA ANG F-15s. Every year while they existed, the Aggressors produced a number of on-the-road detachments with generally 4-6 aircraft, and it was a treat to see these unusually colored birds going in and out with the Eagles for a week! The rear plane is 73-0082 (the side number was the "last two" of the serial number.

LTV A-7D Corsair II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, March 1987
Remark
Photographer
70-1005 / LV (cn D-151) So just what does a stealth fighter look like???!! This was the burning question on the minds of aeronautical enthusiasts and professionals at this time, especially in light of the release of Testor's model kit of the "F-19". Well, the 4450th Tactical Group at exotic-sounding Tonopah Test Range was implicated, but they only (outwardly) flew the humble A-7; beyond that, the trail got cold... So here's my only shot of one of these aircraft on a Friday afternoon 29 approach; all was revealed 1 year later...

Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, February 1987
Remark
Photographer
156688 / A-975 (cn 318-3) Anniversary Frog... Training Squadron 19 celebrated the 75th anniversary of US Naval Aviation in a big way by painting up one of their Buckeyes (with appropriate side number!) to rival anything seen during America's Bicentennial. Normally residing at NAS Meridian, MS, this Fighting Frogs T-2 is seen on short final to Dobbins RWY 11.

Remark
Photographer
840456 / AF-30 (cn IH1019) All is quiet on the static display line at NAS Atlanta the day before the 2000 air show; a good time to study the intricate pattern of the c/s carried by this F-5. Coming from NAS Fallon, NV, where it flies with adversary unit VFC-13 Saints, this two-seater was originally a USAF plane as shown by its number, which was 84-0456 before its transfer to the Navy.
