McDonnell Douglas TA-4J Skyhawk
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, September 8, 1991
Remark
Photographer
155080 / UX-00 (cn 13896) Double Nuts!! The CAG bird for VFC-13 Saints, NAS Miramar, CA, features a "00" side number rendered as "double nuts" (a sort of Navy slang expression for "double zero", another is "triple sticks" for "111"). This Scooter otherwise carries the standard Saints version of the Tactical Paint Scheme and low-viz markings. NAS Atlanta main ramp.

Lockheed
Lockheed L-100-20/HTTB Hercules (L-382E)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, December 18, 1992
Remark
Photographer
N130X / 345 (cn 382-4412) Not long after I began employment at Lockheed Georgia in 1984, I heard of sightings of a mysterious all-black C-130 carrying white letters identifying it as "HTTB". Over the ensuing years, I saw it several times as it underwent configuration changes in its test bed role (proof-of-concept for the C-130J, as it turned out). So here it is, in all its ebony glory taxying for a Rwy. 11 takeoff; next Mar.3, it would crash after loss of control (and inadvertent take off) during high speed run. All 7 killed (RIP)

USA - Marines
Sikorsky VH-3D Sea King (S-61B)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 28, 1992
Remark
Photographer
159353 (cn 61727) Early one morning, I learned that several helicopters from HMX-1, MCAS Quantico, VA, the Marines special air missions unit (VIP transport, among other missions), were present at NAS Atlanta, so I went over for a look. The Marines were quite friendly and willing to allow photography, though, understandably, they were a bit more reticent about the "white top" Sea King than the others. However, I was allowed to photograph it from a distance, complete with some crew members and armed guard (far right).

Boeing Vertol CH-46E Sea Knight (107-II)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 28, 1992
Remark
Photographer
157681 / 19 (cn 2580) The workhorse for HMX-1, the so-called VIP unit (among other missions) was the Sea Knight, and this one is seen on the NAS Atlanta main ramp with its power train panels unbuttoned prior to departure. The Gloss Field Green color scheme carried by these helicopters was quite handsome.

Remark
Photographer
157682 / 20 (cn 2581) Another Sea Knight on the NAS Atlanta main line is being readied for take off. Again, very handsome color scheme and markings, especially compared to the standard "Frogs" in dull TPS! HMX-1, MCAS Quantico, VA.

Sikorsky CH-53D Sea Stallion (S-65A)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 28, 1992
Remark
Photographer
157930 (cn 65-333) The Sea Stallion provided for the heavy lift needs of HMX-1, Quantico, VA, and was also adorned with the same overall Gloss Field Green color scheme and "pinstripes" as the others. They were a very friendly group of Marines, and I appreciated their accommodating me as the readied for departure.

USA - Navy
Grumman F-14A Tomcat
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, December 13, 1991
Remark
Photographer
162709 / AF-100 (cn 555) Friday the 13th, 1991 was memorable for me because that was when Carrier Air Wing (Reserve)-20 executed a practice Alpha (or Alfa, according to the Navy) Strike. Several aircraft met at NAS Atlanta from other locations, including 5 Tomcats. This is the CAG bird for VF-201 Hunters, a sharp Block 140 delivered new to the unit. It bears a 75th Anniv. of U.S. Naval Air Reserve sticker on the tail.

Remark
Photographer
162708 / AF-101 (cn 554) Another Tomcat participant for the CVWR-20 practice Alpha Strike was the Skipper's plane of VF-201 Hunters from NAS Dallas, TX. Besides the 5 F-14s, there were 4 F/A-18s, 4 A-6s (based VA-205), a Prowler, and an E-2C.

USA - Navy
Grumman KA-6D Intruder (G-128)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, October 18, 1991
Remark
Photographer
152624 / AF-521 (cn I-172) Salty 521 (VA-205 Green Falcons) takes a leisurely base leg toward a Rwy29 final approach, flying parallel with Highway 41 and passing quite low and close to the photographers gathered at the cemetary next to 41. This may have been FCLP (field carrier landing practice), which would have been one of a long series of touch-and-go's, but it was a treat in any case! The green anti-collision beacon reserved for tankers (and night vision mod. planes) is evident on the tail.

USA - Navy
McDonnell Douglas A-4F Skyhawk
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, August 6, 1990
Remark
Photographer
155028 / UX-25 (cn 13844) For the last several years of Skyhawk operations by VFC-13 Saints (NAS Miramar, CA), this version of the Tactical Paint Scheme was the norm. This example poses on the NAS Atlanta transit line, and a notable detail of this TPS variation is the lighter gray (counter-shading) on the upper half of the tail. More unusually, the other side featured a much darker gray in the same location (in the vein of the "false canopy" marking for disorienting an opponent).

Egypt - Air Force
Lockheed C-130H Hercules (L-382)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 25, 1989
Remark
Photographer
1275 / SU-BAF (cn 382-4728) A brand new Herk awaits delivery to the customer in the line position usually reserved for imminent acceptance or short term lay over (I saw a number of foreign -130s occupy this spot when picking up priority spare parts). A fairly large batch of C-130s for Egypt was built in a two year period or so then, and they were a frequent sight around the Marietta plant for quite a while.

Thailand - Air Force
Lockheed C-130H-30 Hercules (L-382)
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, November 1988
Remark
Photographer
L8-6/31 / 60106 (cn 382-5148) A beautiful fall afternoon, complete with clear skies, tree colors, and long shadows, provide a lovely setting for this Thai AF "stretch" Herk. Resting between pre-delivery flights on the Lockheed flight test line, this aircraft would eventually go to No. 601 Sqn. at Don Muang airport, Bangkok.

USA - Air Force
Fairchild A-10A Thunderbolt II
Marietta - Dobbins ARB (Atlanta NAS) (MGE / KMGE)
USA - Georgia, May 1987
Remark
Photographer
77-0201 / DM (cn A10-0126) Half of the A-10 Demo Team (the demo. plane and a spare) taxies in after landing on the Friday before air show weekend at Dobbins. The very first unit to operate A-10s- beginning 1976- the 355th TFW, Davis-Monthan AFB provided the demo. planes, this particular one assigned to the 357th Tac. Ftr. Sqn. Dragons. In the background an assortment of Georgia Air Guard Eagles and AFRES C-130Hs occupy the so-called "dead" runway to make room for displays. The chrome treatment to the Warthog's gun muzzle is unique.

USA - Georgia, September 15, 1989
Remark
Photographer
158617 / AF-110 (cn 18) A number of the Tomcats first assigned to Fighting 201 Hunters, NAS Dallas, TX, were older test aircraft that were reconditioned to Block 135 (late-A model) standard. This was one of the oldest- a Block 60, seen on a partly cloudy morning on the NAS Atlanta main ramp. The tail carries what became standard unit markings.
