41-29784 (cn 87-7949) This B-25D Mitchell was sold onto the civilian market circa 1948 and had many owners as N5078N, N122B, N2DD and finally N2XD. She was eventually put on display over the snack bar area on the hangar deck of USS Yorktown at Patriots Point. Almost exactly 62 years earlier 16 B-25 Mitchell bombers had launched from the USS Hornet in the historic Doolittle raid on Tokyo. |

Powered by a single 72 HP Porsche engine, the QH-50A was the droned version of Gyrodyne's XRON-1 Rotorcycle. This particular airframe was the flying evaluation prototype and was capable of carrying one Mark 43 homing torpedo. The technology pioneered by this type is still in use today. Photographed hanging from the ceiling of the USS Yorktown hangar deck. |
