The flight to the 'Bare Base' at RAAF Learmonth West Aust took 2.0 hours. (The Exercise Norward circum-navigation of Australia took 27.0 flying hours). |

A7-018 (cn CA30-18/6391) 2FTS Macchis dominated Pearce for 20 years. Replaced by PC-9s & Hawks. Photo by my father, Peter Eyre. A7-018 first flew 11/06/68, del 04/07/68. W/o 05 Apr 1988 - departed Rwy 18 on an instrument training sortie, engine failed. Instructor, SqnLdr Frank Atkins, jettisoned canopy and Plt Off Andrew Richardson ejected first, followed by Atkins - both suffered minor injuries. A7-018 was at 700ft & 120 kts, and crashed into Twin Swamps Nature Reserve, 2nm south of Pearce. With full fuel, it started a large bush fire, lasting several hours. |

A3-21 (cn 21) Photo taken by my father, Peter Eyre. Nice line-up of Mirage tails of 75 Sqn, based at RAAF Darwin,NT. Left to right: A3-21, A3-73, A3-24, A3-33, A3-9, A3-96, A3-6. 75 Sqn was last in the RAAF to operate the Mirage III (until Sep 1988), as 3 Sqn had already converted to F/A-18A and 77 Sqn was in process of converting. 79 Sqn in Butterworth, Malaysia was also still flying the Mirage III, but only until 4.88. These aircraft all later went to the Pakistan Air Force, and are believed to still be in service. |

A4-208 / 208 (cn 208) 38 Sqn, RAAF. Detached to RAAF Pearce for liaison and Army cooperation work - wears 2FTS marking on tail. Del 11/64. Served 35 Sqn in Vietnam Jun 65 - Feb 72. Suffered battle damage on 30.7.67 (two rounds of .30 calibre) and 19/01/69 (3 mortar rounds hit ground 25m from aircraft). Damaged again in 1985 when wingtip and fuselage damaged during exercise when it ran off a landing ground. It is seen here in special trial of "Desert Pink" camouflage. Later used as a Battle Damage Training aid, Oakey QLD. Is at Oakey having been totally stripped out in preparation for dumping on an artificial reef in Moreton Bay. Still there 10.2004. |
