Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker (717-148)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, May 6, 1980
Remark
Photographer
61-0294 (cn 18201) More flight activity at Griffiss on that long ago spring morning, in this instance a "stovepipe" engine KC-135A climbs away. The ubiquitous overall Corrogard color scheme shows its metallic quality; until the early 80s, this was the only scheme for Stratotankers, and was considered boring. Also, tankers gained a spotlight at the top of the vertical stabilizer that facilitated night refuelings about the same time as the change in color scheme.

Convair F-106A Delta Dart (8)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, May 6, 1980
Remark
Photographer
59-0083 More early morning activity at Griffiss AFB as another of a pair of 49th FIS Darts returns from a mission. As it charges down the runway, the sun angle reveals the highly reflective quality of the overall Gloss ADC Gray finish. Also, the Tactical Air Command insignia is quite prominent high on the tail; less than a year before, Aerospace Defense Command was inactivated and replaced by ADTAC.

Remark
Photographer
59-0076 (cn 8-24-205) Manned Missile!! Nothing like spending a quiet spring morning on Rabbit Rd. in front of the Griffiss runway watching returning 49th FIS Delta Darts practice missed approaches. The rakish lines and colorful markings added to the impression of scorching speed as they popped up into their "closed traffic" turns. In the midst of his accelerated climb, the pilot seems to steal a glance at the photographer!

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 17, 1986
Remark
Photographer
59-2567 (cn 464330) Aluminum Overcast... The sun shines brightly on the weathered flanks of this BUFF as it passes low overhead on take off. Like many other 416th BW B-52s I saw that year, this one's surface is a patchwork of the old SIOP camouflage and dark replacement parts painted in the new "strategic scheme". The "shouldered" look to the forward wingroot is the so-called strake; a structural modification (and visible to satellites) indicative of the cruise missile mod. The 416th was the first USAF unit so-equipped.

Lockheed C-5A Galaxy (L-500)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 6, 1989
Remark
Photographer
69-0009 (cn 500-0040) A darkly camouflaged Galaxy roars over Rabbit Rd. after departing the Griffiss runway. C-5s would regularly spend an hour or two in the pattern at Griffiss, usually coming from Stewart International Airport and the New York ANG 105 Military Airlift Group. The standard Europe 1 finish is accented by large "New York Air Guard" titles on the 'gear doors. The 105th made news in 1983 changing from the AF's smallest (Cessna O-2) to the largest (the C-5)!!

Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker (717-100)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 6, 1989
Remark
Photographer
56-3600 (cn 17349) Seen on take off from Griffiss AFB, this 416th BW tanker illustrates a short-lived color scheme and configuration. KC-135s began to receive the charcoal gray with Aircraft Gray undersides scheme carried by the KC-10 (known as the Shamu scheme!) c.1989, inevitably becoming known as "Baby Shamu". Some 416th A-models (such as this one) received the new colors, but they underwent conversion to the R-model before many were re-painted. Of course, the unit's Statue of Liberty marking and Griffiss title are seen on the upper tail.

Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker (717-100)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, January 1984
Remark
Photographer
**-**** Approaching the Griffiss runway in waning light, this anonymous 416th BW tanker displays the standard scheme for these aircraft consisting of overall Corrogard (aluminized paint) with Aircraft Gray engine nacelles. KC-135s carried this scheme from early in their operational service (the initial finish was bare metal and Flourescent Red Orange trim) until about this time, when they were being repainted overall Aircraft Gray, or more than 20 years.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 24, 1986
Remark
Photographer
59-2584 (cn 464347) Its color details lost in the glare of the midday sun, this dark bird was the first BUFF I saw painted in the Strategic Scheme of dark gray and dark green. Probably one of the first 416th BW aircraft so-painted, it is missing what became a very redeeming detail of this otherwise very dull finish: the enormous Statue of Liberty tail marking!!

General Dynamics FB-111A Aardvark
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, June 26, 1987
Remark
Photographer
68-0265 (cn B1-37) SAC "heavy" metal! The day before the 1987 Griffiss AFB air show was a lot of fun with arriving display aircraft and their impromptu performances. However, this dark, menacing FB-111 from Plattsburgh AFB (roughly 250 mi. from Griffiss on Lake Champlain) did not attend the show, but nevertheless entertained with a long series of low approaches and very noisy go-arounds beneath an overcast sky. The 380th Bombardment Wing insignia may be discerned below the cockpit (a sword presented vertically downward and a cloud on either side).

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, June 1983
Remark
Photographer
5***** The sun is getting low, and the lights are becoming quite visible on the 416th BW BUFF as it passes overhead. Griffiss AFB was sited in a somewhat rural setting, surrounded by farms and woods. There was a single road that passed the north end of the runway (Wright Settlement/ Rabbit Rd.), and it was a picturesque location for viewing SAC and ADC "heavy iron"!!

Convair F-106A Delta Dart (8)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 24, 1986
Remark
Photographer
59-0135 The same 49th Fighter Interceptor Sqn. Dart blasting away on take off in photo #1972821 is seen a week later in the squadron maintenance hangar at Griffiss AFB, NY. It wears the insignia of the 49th on the nose (they are variously referred to as the Green Eagles or Cavaliers), and, as always for interceptors, is finished in a flawless coat of so-called Air Defense Command Gray.

Convair F-106B Delta Dart (8)

USA - New York, September 24, 1986
Remark
Photographer
58-0901 (cn 8-27-43) What a great opportunity it was to walk around these classic Century Series fighter interceptors in an operational setting. There were about 7 or 8 of them present in the 49th FIS maintenance hangar that day, and it was a treat to see them among all the clutter and activity. Like being in a stable full of thoroughbred race horses! The "family model" Dart in the photo may also be seen in its "afterlife" as a piloted drone 9 years later in photos #2085307 and #2256185.

Boeing KC-135A Stratotanker (717-100)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 24, 1986
Remark
Photographer
63-7986 (cn 18603) An immaculate (probably newly painted) Stratotanker gets a tow across the vast Griffiss ramp on a beautiful fall morning. It is finished in overall Gloss Aircraft Gray, the earlier scheme it replaced (starting c.1983) was overall Corrogard (aluminum) with Aircraft Gray engine nacelles. When this photo was taken, the bombers and tankers of the 416th BW were just beginning to receive the famous Statue of Liberty tail markings.

Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker (717-148)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 11, 1991
Remark
Photographer
59-1472 (cn 17960) It's a very pleasant summer afternoon on the Griffiss flightline as this Stratotanker slowly makes its way to its assigned spot. While this was a fitting occasion for viewing this colorful and interesting scheme for the last time, my next visit (Aug. '92), revealed only a handful of 416th B.W. tankers still carrying the overall Aircraft Gray and none (in this scheme) had the Statue of Liberty tail markings.

Remark
Photographer
62-3521 (cn 18504) A Stratotanker at rest on the Griffiss line in pleasing lighting and summer cumulus in the background. Practically ideal conditions for recording a very attractive color scheme and markings that were soon to disappear.
