USA - Air Force
Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker (717-148)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 11, 1991
Remark
Photographer
59-1472 (cn 17960) It's a very pleasant summer afternoon on the Griffiss flightline as this Stratotanker slowly makes its way to its assigned spot. While this was a fitting occasion for viewing this colorful and interesting scheme for the last time, my next visit (Aug. '92), revealed only a handful of 416th B.W. tankers still carrying the overall Aircraft Gray and none (in this scheme) had the Statue of Liberty tail markings.

Remark
Photographer
62-3521 (cn 18504) A Stratotanker at rest on the Griffiss line in pleasing lighting and summer cumulus in the background. Practically ideal conditions for recording a very attractive color scheme and markings that were soon to disappear.

Convair F-106A Delta Dart (8)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 1, 1987
Remark
Photographer
57-0234 This 49th Fighter Interceptor Sqn. Six gets a tow after an emergency landing. The occasion was the stand-down ceremony for the unit (the last regular USAF Dart unit) in which this aircraft participated in the last four-ship flyby when the emergency brought about its return (hydraulic system problem, as I recall). The pilot appeared visibly frustrated (here and in the alert barn shot of the same plane, #2105996), though he was on his way again (to D-M) within the hour!

Remark
Photographer
57-0234 An overview of the 49th FIS alert "barns" prior to the inactivation ceremony. The four nearest shelters are clearly occupied, while- I believe- at least some or all of the other four also contain aircraft. Four of these flew over for the ceremony (1 returning, of course), continuing to D-M for storage, while others flew out subsequently. On my previous visit in 1986 (when the unit was fully active), I was warned not to even approach within 100' of the fence that is now open because of alert security.

Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker (717-148)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, August 5, 1992
Remark
Photographer
62-3573 (cn 18556) Markings in transition... This view affords a rare look at the very brief period of changeover in tanker colors and markings, in this instance one of only a few 416th KC-135R's still wearing the overall Aircraft Gray scheme. What appears to be a Military Airlift Command insignia over the wing root (where the Strategic Air Command marking would be) is actually the new Air Mobility Command badge, which is simply a re-title MAC insignia. The plane also bears nose art: Coyote's Revenge (Roadrunner & Coyote).

Lockheed C-130A Hercules (L-182)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, May 6, 1980
Remark
Photographer
57-0524 (cn 182-3231) Possibly belonging to the 143rd Tactical Airlift Sqn. of the Rhode Island Air Guard, this Herk passes low over the perimeter fence on departing Griffiss. It wears basically the same color scheme that came into use during the Vietnam War. It may also be noted this is apparently the last production C-130A.

Remark
Photographer
57-0234 This photo would have been impossible for me to take only days before this, but here we see the pilot of this Dart exiting while ground crewmen get busy in the confines of a 49th Fighter Interceptor Sqn. alert barn. The subject of the photo experienced a system malfunction after participating in a final four-ship fly-by. The nose insignia is that of First Air Force (commanding air defense units) and the occasion was the inactivation of the 49th- which made this photo possible!!

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 10, 2010
Remark
Photographer
58-0225 (cn 464293) Preserved in the Griffiss Airpark at the former Griffiss AFB, she is named 'Mohawk Valley'. She looks good after a recent re-paint but the New York state weather is not doing her any good. Note the simple but effective memorial behind her nose.

USA - Air Force
Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, January 1984
Remark
Photographer
57-6487 (cn 464192) The low winter sun gently illuminates this 416th Bombardment Wing BUFF as it approaches the Griffiss runway. A classic B-52 color scheme, often referred to as SIOP (Single Integrated Operational Plan, or the unified Department of Defense nuclear war plan which dominated Cold War military thinking), it was initially applied in 1965 during the Vietnam War, when the USAF began camouflaging combat aircraft in general. This Stratofort models it well in this light, and it would last several more years.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress

USA - New York, June 1988
Remark
Photographer
57***** A 416th Bombardment Wing B-52 passes over Rabbit Road outside the perimeter fence on takeoff. Spewing the dark smoke trails that accompany the use of water injection (making cooler, denser air in the compression and combustion chambers and increasing thrust) for a heavyweight takeoff, this BUFF bears the dark green/dark gray Strategic Scheme, which also affords a seldom seen view of steam venting from the undersides of the engine nacelles due to the water injection.

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, September 17, 1986
Remark
Photographer
57-6477 (cn 464182) Seeing these gigantic birds through my childhood (McCoy AFB, FL) to adulthood and beyond, this is the way I like to remember her: the full effect of her size and majesty as seen passing overhead, the multi-color camouflage, and the avalanche of sound, which can only be imagined if you never saw a B-52G in flight (the still-flying -H model is quieter). This 416th Bomb. Wing, 668 B.S. BUFF shows change in c/s with temporarily darkened reflective surfaces prior to a darker c/s; light radome is notable.

Remark
Photographer
59-2568 (cn 464331) This late-"G" model BUFF shows 13 Desert Storm missions to its credit on the forward fuselage as it rests on the Griffiss flight line. Aside from wearing the striking 416th Bomb. Wing Statue of Liberty tail marking, it also models the brand new overall Gunship Gray that would eventually replace earlier color schemes on bombers.

Boeing KC-135R Stratotanker (717-148)
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, August 7, 1992
Remark
Photographer
63-8035 (cn 18652) An "R"model tanker climbs away from the Griffiss runway during a session of closed traffic patterns. It belongs to the 41st Air Refueling Sqn., which for decades came under the co-located 416th Bombardment Wing but now answers to the geographically separated 380th ARW at Plattsburgh AFB on Lake Champlain. The new Air Mobility Command insignia (merely a re-titled Military Airlift Command badge) is visible on the nose, and the finish is the short-lived Baby Shamu scheme (derived from the older KC-10 c/s).

Boeing B-52G Stratofortress
Rome - Griffiss Airpark (AFB) (RME / KRME)
USA - New York, July 11, 1989
Remark
Photographer
57-6501 (cn 464206) One of several BUFF's pounding the Griffiss circuit that summer afternoon, this 416th Bombardment Wing "G" model wears the "Strategic Scheme" green and gray and the classic Statue of Liberty insignia. Two other notable features are the ex-Hound Dog missile pylon fitted with multiple ejector racks (under the left wing only) and the still extended right wing outrigger landing gear; a hung-up gear is not an uncommon sight on a B-52 in the pattern.

63-8038 (cn 18655) A recent arrival from the 93rd Bomb. Wing, Castle AFB, CA, this KC-135R bears nose art from that assignment entitled The Contender. This same plane may be seen a year later in Airliners.net photo ID 2034731, where it has acquired the so-called Shamu scheme.
