C5-GAB (cn 2024) Two transports of delight - this smart YS-11, acquired from ANA (JA8660) in 4.92, seen here on a maintenance visit, and my beloved Golf GTi Mk II. C5-GAB is still intact at Banjul, stored in very dusty condition; as for E967JAJ, I don't know |

9U-BHP (cn 2165) The only way I could get an angle on this interesting subject was by precariously balancing on the pitched roof of the security man's hut. D/d Southwest Air Lines 7.71 JA8778; to 9Y-TJB 9.78; took up the Burundi reg shortly before this shot in the ex-Air Caribbean colours but burnt out 3.11.01, said to be because of a stray firework |

N924 (cn 2129) Imagine my amazement as I was driving along the Southend seafront one Saturday and saw a procession of four YS-11s land one after another, all the more surprising as I'd shot them nicely just two months before in Malta. The other three were ex-Piedmont and had their individual "Pacemaker" names suitably adapted. Although this one was previously Gabon Government’s TR-KIA, they still gave it a Piedmont-style name, "Suez Canal Pacemaker". The four were on delivery to PBA. N924 was b/u at Hyannis, MA 7.93 |

G-AOLK (cn PAC/225) This 1949 aircraft, formerly VS618, was one of the 252 RAF-surplus Prentices bought up by Freddie Laker and ferried to his company ATEL at Southend and Stansted for conversion as 5-seater GA tourers. Despite a price tag of just £1500, only 28 were civilianised and the rest were scrapped. Since 1964 this one has been owned by Alan Hilton. Seen here on a winter's day being readied for flight with a departing Luftwaffe Transall incongrously framed by the mortal remains of ex-Merpati Vanguard G-BAMX |

RA-65941 (cn 60642) I've shot a pretty wide range of interesting subjects in that spot over the years, before or after attention in the hangar, but this must be one of the most unusual, rating as Southend's only ever Tupolev visitor. Originally Balkan's LZ-TUS in 9.78 and converted to corporate configuration around 1995; sometimes used as personal transport of the famous chess champion Gary Kasparov. To RusLine 8.06 and Kosmos 6.09 |
