42-12647 / 34 Rare 1988 low res close cropped front view of former US Army Air Force Lightning P-38F-5-LO Bu 42-12647 (Code 34), at the PNG War Museum in Port Moresby. She was Accpeted into the USAAF in June 1942, and was one of the first batch of P-38s to arrive in Australia. 1/Lt Ralph Bills shot down his second Zero while flying this aircraft on 31Dec1942. Later the aircraft was Named: 'Dottie from Brooklyn'. The P-38F crashed near Port Moresby in Jan 1944, and was recovered in 1978 and taken to the War Museum. |

NX17630 / 17630/5757 (cn 222-5757) (USAF serial # 41-7630). Assigned to the 94th Fighter Squadron, ditched in Greenland on Sept. 15, 1942 while on ferry flight to European theatre of Ops,buried in ice for 50 years hence named "Glacier Girl". Recovered in 1992 and rebuilt for first flight in 2002. |

42-67762 (cn 422-2273) U.S. aviation museums are used to display their aircraft in immaculate conditions, like the Hawker Hurricane seen in the background. However, I find it is sometimes nice to see a preserved airplane with many scars –as this Lightning-, which shows it had gone through a real, tough life in the skies. |
