G-AOLK (cn PAC/225) This 1949 aircraft, formerly VS618, was one of the 252 RAF-surplus Prentices bought up by Freddie Laker and ferried to his company ATEL at Southend and Stansted for conversion as 5-seater GA tourers. Despite a price tag of just £1500, only 28 were civilianised and the rest were scrapped. Since 1964 this one has been owned by Alan Hilton. Seen here on a winter's day being readied for flight with a departing Luftwaffe Transall incongrously framed by the mortal remains of ex-Merpati Vanguard G-BAMX |

G-APJB / VR259/M (cn PAC/086) Lovely old aircraft at Kemble Air Day 2007. As may be guessed by the markings, this aircraft was previously VR259 with the RAF. |

G-APJB / VR259/M (cn PAC/086) This 1948 Prentice, seen here at the Kemble Air Day, is surprisingly one of as many as five on the British civil register – it is owned by RVL Aviation of Coventry Airport. 300 Prentices served the RAF as basic trainers between 1948 and 1953, alongside the Chipmunk. The type was powered by a 251hp Gypsy Queen six, and had four seats, for a student, an instructor and two skiving National Servicemen with clip-boards – those were the days… (400D, Sigma 28-300 & fluid-head tripod) |
