USA - Navy
Vought F-8J Crusader
San Diego - Miramar MCAS (NAS) / Mitscher Field (NKX / KNKX)
USA - California, October 6, 1979
Remark
Photographer
150302 / PP-100 The F-8J was a re-manufactured variant of the F-8E to F-8H standard, incorporating the boundary layer control system amongst other improvements. Late in her career with VFP-63, this example was retired to MASDC a couple of years later. Cockpit label reads "Cdr Taco Bell". The Crusader was not an easy aircraft to fly with a high attrition rate compared with contemporaries, but had some extraordinary qualities; it is said that several pilots successfully took off with the wings folded - presumably accidentally!

Vought F7U-3M Cutlass
Pensacola - NAS / Forrest Sherman Field (NPA / KNPA)
USA - Florida, October 16, 2006
Remark
Photographer
129655 The gull-winged F7U Cutlass with its tailless, swept-wing profile was not a sucessful aircraft. All three XFU7-1 prototypes crashed. Later revisions were improved but still underpowered and suffered nosewheel issues. The F7U-3M was the missile-carrying variant. In March-1953, the USS Interpid sailed with Sparrow 1 missile equipped F7U-3Ms. Preserved at the National Museum of Naval Aviation.

Vought F-8A Crusader
Chino (CNO)
USA - California, July 14, 2007
Remark
Photographer
145336 / DW-16 The Crusader was not an easy airplane to fly, and often unforgiving in carrier landings where it suffered from yaw instability and the castering nose wheel. Not surprisingly, the mishap rate was relatively high compared to its contemporaries, the A-4 Skyhawk and the F-4 Phantom II. However, the aircraft did possess some amazing capabilities, as proven when several hapless Crusader pilots took off from Da Nang with the wings folded.

Remark
Photographer
147030 / NE-461 All the aircraft on display at the USS Midway Museum are beautifully restored and maintained, but this F-8 seems to have a little something "extra" that makes it stand out above the rest.

Vought TF-8A/SCW Crusader
Edwards - AFB (EDW / KEDW)
USA - California, April 14, 2005
Remark
Photographer
810 / 141353 F-8 Supercritical Wing Aircraft. This research aircraft was the first airplane to demonstrate the transonic performance capabilities of a supercritical wing. This airplane demonstrated a drag-rise Mach number of 0.96 at cruise lifting conditions. The resulting technology base permitted an increase in cruise Mach number for transport aircraft from approximately 0.8 to above 0.9. Wings of this type are now routinely utilized on all new military and commercial transport aircraft. [Text by Nasa]

802 / 145546 F-8 Digital Fly-By-Wire Aircraft. This research aircraft was the first airplane to fly using a digital fly-by-wire electronic flight-control system with no mechanical backup system. The initial system utilized components from the Apollo spacecraft guidance and control system. Digital fly-by-wire flight-control systems are now being incorporated into the designs of the most modern commercial transport airplanes, and are routinely used on nearly all new military aircraft. First flight: May 25, 1972.
