162602 / NL-102 (cn 524) The 1994 flight deck of the USS Kitty Hawk. Notice the now retired A-6E Intruder and the soon to be retired S-3B Viking & F-14 Tomcat. Tomcat 102 was destroyed in a crash just a few months after this photo was taken. |

162602 / NL-102 (cn 524) While on approach to the USS Kitty Hawk at night, this aircraft struck the "round-down" area of the flight deck and broke in two. The pilot and RIO ejected from the front portion of the aircraft as it skidded down the flight deck. This section caught the 3 wire (I was in the No.3 engine room below deck!) Although the crew landed in the fire, they were rescued with only minor injuries. See related photo here. |
