61-7972 (cn 2023) This aircraft was a guest at the 1974 Farnborough Airshow having crossed from New York to London in 1 hour 54 minutes and 56.4 seconds, a time that shattered the previous record. Unfortunately the whole show was marred by torrential rain that led to flooding and the state of the ground can also be seen in this image. |

61-7972 (cn 2023) Official name "Blackbird" due to the special black paint used. This paint was formulated to absorb radar signals, to radiate some of the tremendous airframe heat generated by air friction, and to camouflage the aircraft against the dark sky at high altitudes. Even at rest she gets a lot of attention due to her dark and ominous stance. This frame was active USAF for 24 years and has logged 2,801.1 hours of flight time. |
