Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) Designed to a USAF Strategic Air Command proposal for a Mach 3 long range bomber. Two flew, the other example crashing after an air-to-air collision. 62-001 was later used by NASA for research for supersonic transport aircraft.

USA - Air Force
North American XB-70A Valkyrie
Dayton - Wright-Patterson AFB (Wright AFB) (DWF) (closed)
USA - Ohio, August 1973
Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) The proposed fleet of B-70 deep penetration nuclear bombers was cancelled in 1961 due to high costs and the introduction of ICBMs, but two prototypes of this awesome six-engined Mach 3 beauty were used in supersonic test flights from 1964 to 1969. One crashed following a midair collision with an F-104 while filming in 1966, the other became an outstanding exhibit at the USAFM, arriving on 4.2.69. One of the most memorable sights of my first visit to the USA

Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) Back in 1987 the XB-70A Valkyrie was on display outside and her sheer size just dominated the area around her.

Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) This angle shows why the XB-70A Valkyrie was unofficially nicknamed 'Cecil' by her test crews after a children's tv cartoon character 'Cecil the Sea-Sick Sea Serpent'.

Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) The XB-70, shown here just six months after its arrival at the USAF museum in Dayton. Photo taken by my great uncle and scanned from a slide. Thanks to David Lednicer for retouching the old slide.

62-0001 (cn 278-1) The XB-70 on display outside of the USAF museum in Dayton, Ohio. Fortunately, it has since been moved indoors, into the R&D hangar. Photo taken by my great uncle and scanned from a slide. Thanks to David Lednicer for retouching the old slide.

Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) The sole remaining example of what one A.net sage called perhaps "the single most beautiful thing man ever made from metal" surely deserves to be cleaner than this.

Remark
Photographer
62-0001 (cn 278-1) USAF Museum. First of only two built. This Mach 3+ strategic bomber looks like a prehistoric bird. The program was cancelled and the XB-70 made its last flight to the Museum in Feb 69.
