72-1570 (cn C.0002) One of two prototypes built for the USAF competition for a new lightweight fighter, which was eventually won by the F-16. McDonanell Douglas teamed with Northrop to develop the design into the much heavier F-18. This aircraft is currently preserved at USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park, Mobile, Alabama. |

72-1570 (cn C.0002) This was the second and last YF-17 built. It first flew on 21st August, 1974 and was in a design competition with the F-16 to which it lost. The design lead to the development of the F-18. The aircraft is seen here being towed from the static park to the flight line ready for a very sprightly display. |

72-1570 (cn C.0002) Naval Aviation Museum. One of the only two YF-17 built. YF-17 lost against the F-16 initially, but was modified as a naval aircraft as the F-18 by McDonnell Douglas as prime contractor. Thanks Ariel! |
