N281PR (cn 001) Heat-haze screwed up all the distant images of the Proteus on finals... so I'm afraid I'll have to do with this side-on! |

N281PR (cn 001) The Proteus is a high altitude research platform, which can carry different types of payloads, it is seen carrying the Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP), an USAF project led by contractor Northrop Grumman to develop the next generation of airborne air-to-air and air-to-ground radar systems. Proteus can reportedly be operated remotely from the ground, but for this test flight a crew was on board. |

N281PR (cn 001) A weird aircraft design, very unusual to the eye. Proteus is a high altitude research platform, which can carry different types of payloads, it is seen carrying the Multi-Platform Radar Technology Insertion Program (MP-RTIP), an USAF project led by contractor Northrop Grumman to develop the next generation of airborne air-to-air and air-to-ground radar systems. Proteus is able to stay airborne for quite a long time and enjoyed the company of a chase plane (Piper Cheyenne) on this day. |

N281PR (cn 001) One of the most interesting aircraft I have ever seen, pretty different from your standard airplane! N281PR is seen resting on the South Ramp at HNL as a beautiful Hawaiian sunset leaves dramatic colors in the sky. |

N281PR (cn 001) Between all the scrap metal in Mojave, Scaled Composites makes some weird looking futuristic crafts. This is Proteus, a high altitude platform which can carry different types of payloads, mostly used for telecommunications and reconnaissance. Proteus can remain airborne for 14 hours and can be piloted or operated remotely. [Canon 20D] |

N281PR (cn 001) Proteus operates at altitudes from 59,000 to more than 65,000 feet for up to 18 hours. It was designed to carry telecommunications systems for relay of broadband data. It can be reconfigured for a variety of other missions such as atmospheric research and can reportedly be operated remotely from the ground, though a two man crew is normally used. |
