N793VS (cn 245) National Museum of the US Air Force. Another unique plane in the museum's R&D Gallery. The Total In-Flight Simulator (TIFS) was used to study how an aircraft would fly before building an expensive prototype. It could be configured with two different noses. The first one was a 2-person cockpit from which onboard computers simulated the handling of various aircraft. The second one could carry a wide array of radars, cameras and other sensors. [Canon EOS 40D, EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM lens]

N793VS (cn 245) National Museum of the USAF. In the late 1960s the USAF converted a C-131B into a NC-131H Total In-Flight Simulator (TIFS). The aircraft could be configured with 2 different noses. The first one was a 2 person cockpit from which onboard computers simulated the handling of various aircraft. The second nose could carry a wide array of radars, cameras and other sensors. During its career the TIFS simulated many military, NASA and civilian aircraft including the Space Shuttle. (Canon 40D + 17-55 IS + 430EX)

N793VS (cn 245) Operated by Calspan Flight Research. I had thought this aircraft had gone the way of the dodo bird. I remember seeing it fly around years ago. It is called a TIFS (Total In-Flight Simulator) and was made from a Convair C-131. The front cockpit could be set up with the cockpit of anything and through computers the aircraft can be made to handle as that particular aircraft. This aircraft was used a lot to train shuttle astronauts early in the program on how to fly the orbitor.
