NC17334 (cn 1920) The history in this picture is amazing even though it was taken in 2007. The Flagship Detroit is the worlds oldest flying DC3, having started out as an American Airlines DC3. The Flagship Detroit Foundation has done an amazing job with the restoration. The picture was taken at AA's LGA Employee Appreciation Day. Its thought that AA's LGA hangars are the last standing structures (parts of them) that once housed one of AA's larger DC3 operations. |

NC17334 (cn 1920) If you look closely, a great deal of the Ft.Lauderdale beach is reflected in the shiny mirror-like fuselage interrupted only by rivets. The aqua color tint on the underside is caused by the reflection of the surface of the Atlantic Ocean which is just out of sight in this picture. She is doing a high speed pass (an oxymoron for a DC-3?) over the Atlantic Ocean's surface. 1937 vintage back in AA "Flagship Detroit" collars. |

NC17334 (cn 1920) "Flagship Detroit"...69 years old this year. This American Airlines DC-3, built in 1937, is looking as good as the day she was manufactured! Immaculate. [Canon 300D, 17-40 f/4L] |

NC17334 (cn 1920) During the summer of 1934, American decided that it needed a plane that could fly nonstop between New York and Chicago with both the roominess of the Condor and also the DC-2's performance. It approached Douglas about providing a plane to meet these requirements. Manufactured in 1937. Other registrations include: NC17334, XB-JAD, XB-HED, N4843V. Now in the splendid AA color's of "Flagship Detroit". First picture of this plane in these colors in database. |
