OV-103 (cn OV-103) Space shuttle "Discovery" get a visit from "NASA helo1" as she sits on Shuttle Carrier Aircraft N905NA. She has just exited the demate device and is crew has begun the preparations for her big ferry flight to the Smithsonian at sunrise tomorrow. All three vehicles are vintage being atleast 40 year old designs! The "go ahead" to build the "cheap" shuttle was given in 1972 by Nixon hence her design age. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) Discovery's Final Journey: With NASA 905, the 747 Shuttle Carrie Aircraft (SCA) in the background in the predawn twilight, Discovery is towed to the Shuttle Landing Facility Runway for its final journey: The Smithsonian in Washington. After the 75 minute tow from the VAB, Discovery will be hoisted atop the 747 SCA, secured, and flown up the coast on its final airborne trip. A sad day for all. |

OV-103 (cn OV-103) For the first time in my time span of photographing and being around the space shuttle fleet, I tick the Airliners.net upload box "preserved" for 'Discovery". Today is the milestone as she is finally done and ready for delivery to the Smithsonian. All that is left is for the ferry flight to Dulles. She is no longer capable of ever returning to operational status with multiple vital systems permanently disabled. |
