The PR.XIX flew the RAF’s last operational Spitfire sortie, during the Malayan emergency 'Operation Firedog’ in 1955, although the type remained in service for weather reconnaissance until the early 'sixties. |

PS915 (cn 6S/585121) One of the BBMF’s two PR.19 Spitfires is seen here undergoing major overhaul in the Flight’s hangar at RAF Coningsby in early 2010. The Flight is now the Engineering Authority for all Spitfire variants, which means it has authority for approving engineering standards and modifications for the aircraft worldwide, an authority held in normal circumstances by an aircraft manufacturer. |

PS915 (cn 6S/585121) Whilst touring about the U.K. I managed to time my drive to coincide perfectly with the Duxford Airshow followed by the Shoreham Air Show a few days later. Here a rare Supermarine 389 Spitfire PR19 was on display and also performed for the spectators. You have to love the sound of that Griffon V12. |

PS915 (cn 6S/585121) One of the BBMF’s PR.19s is seen here during its display at the Battle of Britain Air Show at Kemble. Earlier in the day it had departed from Kemble with Hurricane LF363 to overfly the 70th anniversary celebrations in Westminster Abbey. This view clearly shows what a tight fit the Spitfire’s cockpit is for a pilot in a modern flying helmet. PS915 wears the markings of the last operational RAF Spitfire, which retired at RAF Seletar during the Malayan Emergency in 1955. |

PS915 (cn 6S/585121) One of the BBMF’s PR19s is seen here departing the Kemble Battle of Britain Air Show to overfly the 70th anniversary celebrations at Westminster Abbey with Hurricane LF363. It wears the PRU Blue and Medium Sea Grey livery dating from the last years of the PR Spitfire’s RAF career in the mid-'fifties. The type remained in RAF service with the met flight at Woodvale until 1957 and a single example (PS853) was retained by Fighter Command until 1963. |
