UK - Scotland, July 11, 2009
Remark
Photographer
ZG774 / GV (cn 904/AS138/3446) The famous black and white chequers of 43(F) Squadron are now no more. This was to be the last Tornado F3 I would photograph whilst still being operated by the Fighting Cocks.

Remark
Photographer
ZG774 / GV (cn 904/AS138/3446) July 13, 2009, sadly marks the disbandment of one of the RAF’s finest fighter squadrons – that of 43(F) Squadron. Formed at Stirling in 1916, it wasn’t until the squadron converted to the Gloster Gamecock ten years later that it earned its nickname “The Fighting Cocks”. Its battle honours include Somme 1917, Battle of Britain 1940, Gulf 1991 and Iraq 2003. It is hoped the squadron will be resurrected in the near future as a Typhoon unit at RAF Leuchars, 43(F) Squadron's spiritual home. Gloria Finis.

Remark

ZG774 / GV (cn 904/AS138/3446) A dying breed. One of the RAF's most famous fighter squadrons, 43(F) Squadron has been slated for disbandment at the end of July 2009. It remains to be seen whether it will reform as a Typhoon unit at its Fife base.

Remark
Photographer
ZG774 / WK (cn 904/AS138/3446) No. 56(R) Squadron "Firebirds" jet, seen here back at her old home taxiing to runway 25 for departure. Sadly the unit ceased operations with its F.3's during April 2008, another sign that the service life of the Tornado F.3 is coming to an end.
