N777TY (cn 508) owned here by TY Corp (the makers of Beanie Babies). After maintenance the aircraft took off from West Palm Beach airport on 14 Feb 2002 with tongue depressors in the weight-on-wheel (WOW) switches. These depressors were placed to override the switches so that the landing gear could be retracted for testing while standing on jacks. Before the aircraft took-off it was forgotten to remove the tongue depressors. After take-off the landing gear could not be retracted and the pilot decided to return. When the throttles were closed in the flare, and the WOW switches still giving an “on the ground” indication, the spoilers were automatically deployed. This caused the aircraft to descend with a nasty rate, resulting in a very hard landing, shearing the right main landing gear aft and pushing it up through the wing. The two pilots reported no injuries. Other regs this aircraft has operated under include N508GA, N777GV, N899GM, and (currently as of Nov 04) N777PY. |
