N493DF (cn 12001) Super Huey on the pad with fuel and foam on the way, as CDF S2 bomber '70' taxies to takeoff. It may look like sunset, but in actuality it's the result of Ramona being surrounded by the Paradise and Cedar fires, to it's north and south (respectively). C-2100UZ, 1/650th, F3.5, ISO100, 189mm. |

N370EH (cn 30624) Ramona Helitack (H-538). The Cedar and Paradise fires, along with high winds, gave parts of eastern San Diego county "Nuclear Winter" on day two of the fires. Visibility is less than 1/4 a mile, ash and dust fall like snow, the temperature is up to 30 degrees cooler than it should be, and an eerie red glow from the fire means all aircraft are grounded. It takes a lot to keep these guys down. C-2100UZ, 1/200th, F2.8, ISO100, 115mm. |

N493DF (cn 12001) "Battle for Julian" -- Making a 330gal drop less than 1/4 a mile from Downtown Julian. Dispite 35kt+ winds, this helicopter was making an incredible 3 drops per minute thanks to the close proximity of the water source -- that's sixty-thousand gallons per hour of fire-killing air power. C-2100UZ, 1/500th, F6.3, ISO100, 388mm. |

N70C (cn 70-0583) The one-and-only "Firehawk" (not including the LACFD version) arrives in Ramona fresh off the Pendleton fire to battle the Otay, Cedar and Paradise fires in San Diego County. Aircraft mechanic Roger (permission given for use) readies the aircraft for their first day on the So-Cal fires. C-2100UZ, 1/1000th, F8.0, ISO400(!), 229mm. |
