I haven't posted on here in a very, very long time. I got out of flying for several years and when I came back the garbage on guard was a shocker. The worst was when someone was actually declaring an emergency, you know, the frequency's purpose, and kept getting blocked by these buffoons. No politic...
Jump to postI believe the company that leased the space was called Air Cargo Masters or something like that. There were nightly flights from Kitty Hawk, Ryan, ATI and others. Additionally lots of on demand cargo in falcon 20s, 20 series lears, convairs, and others from Ameristar, USA Jet, Kalitta, Zantop, Grand...
Jump to postIt varies widely by the aircraft, owner, and pilot preferences in some cases. In my case, the aircraft is on a charter certificate. The owner wants it to fly charter whenever possible to generate some revenue and offset costs. That means I often find myself bouncing all over the east coast for a cou...
Jump to postSocietal norms change. Years ago you would not have seen a woman, or person of color in the cockpit. Some guys have long hair, and piercings.
Jump to postI used to stay in Stamford on HPN overnights. Nice place. Much better than the few hotels in White Plains.
Jump to postMany FBO's will have someone designated on call, and charge a "call out fee" for that person to come in after hours. I just had to use this when our destination was below minimums and we had to drop our passengers at a nearby airport so they could use a car service to their destination. If...
Jump to postIt's heavy, has cooling issues because of the length, and it burns a ton of gas. All reasons that it didn't survive.
Jump to postThe "enhanced wingtip" as Embraer calls it on the 175 is just a more efficient design. Without getting super detailed, it give the 175, which weighs roughly 3000 pounds more, performance more on par with the 170. From the pilot's perspective, it adds about 10 feet to the wingspan that you ...
Jump to postAmazing on such heavy planes that moving around 800 pounds could make a noticeable difference. If you're moving several people from the last row in loading section C, to section A in the front, it's going to have a pretty big change to the moment. If they're being moved, the airplane wasn't within ...
Jump to postThe airstairs sit on a track, they are stowed forward of the door internally. They are manually moved into position in front of the door, then a panel with buttons controls retraction and extension. They cannot be operated from the outside, and the L1 cabin door cannot be closed with the stairs exte...
Jump to postCrew domiciles will usually be associated with hubs. Some regionals still utilize outstation basing in places like Indianapolis, St. Louis, and Columbus, but those are the exception. Base choices, like everything else in this industry, are dictated by seniority.
Jump to postThe FADEC on many modern jets will command thrust to idle in the event of a reverser deployment in flight.
Jump to postThe intake of the APU is a pretty bad design on the 145. It's very easy to get fluid into it since there's a big hole on the upper right side of the fuselage and as a result, deicing with it running is not advisable. The reason that the running engine has to be run up is to get the minimum required ...
Jump to postHello Franklyn,
I deal with my local FSDO regarding pilot certificate conversions on a regular basis. My suggestion to you would be to call the FSDO, and ask an inspector exactly what you will need for the conversion. They should be happy to help you, it's their job.
It's not an issue, otherwise they would not have sold several thousand aircraft with it. It's actually quite comfortable in most cases. I do wish the pivot point was a little closer to the handles like it is in hawkers, as the crosswind thing is annoying, but it's nothing more than an inconvenience....

Jump to postIn many newer types, some of the voice commands are configured by user option. The Ejets are a great example. Jump to postA little respect on both ends of the phone go a long way. The problem at my former carrier was that the FAs had a very weak contract, and a very authoritarian management. As a result, the schedulers were very forceful, and often times this carried over to how they tried to talk to the pilot group. T...
Jump to postI appreciate the replies and opinions.....I understand commuting is hard, I also understand it's hard to just up and move to a new city, usually a larger city with higher cost of living, ESPECIALLY on a flight attendants pay starting out. Jump to postStick to the east coast, and understand that the routes that are flown constantly change hands. Any of the former Northwest/Delta hubs (ATL, DTW, MSP, JFK/LGA) may be tough commute because there may be a number of crew members doing it. As flight attendant, you can't sit in the cockpit jumpseat so t...
Jump to postThose are what Embraer calls "enhanced wingtips". They are only on the 175 and help to bring the performance closer to the 170. They add 10 feet to the wingspan.

Embraer ist still using Yokes as well...not sure if they plan to switch that at some time. Also some (but not many) business manufacturers still use yokes as far as I know. The E2 will be their last design with a control wheel as they call it. The Legacy 450/500 already have side sticks. They wante...
Jump to postThey're standard on the ejets. I don't know if there is a fuel penalty but my understanding is they give a pretty significant noise reduction. If they didn't have a benefit, they wouldn't be there.
Many other new aircraft are being equipped with them as well.
If it will fit in a 737, it will fit in an ejet.
Jump to postThey aren't bad when they're made for widebodies and you fly an RJ. There is one in ORD on the C gates (8 I think) that will make ice. It's awesome.
Jump to postEmbraer is also banking on selling these to existing E-Jet operators as they should share a common type with the E1 variants. The 170 has been in operation for close to 15 years and some of those original airplanes are getting long in the tooth. Fuel savings will also be a great cost saver as few ex...

Jump to postAs a simulator instructor, I can say this: They can do a lot more and replicate a lot more "emergencies" than we have time for during an initial training course. Regulatory requirements combined with customers trying to control costs mean we are trying to cram 10 pounds of stuff into a 5 pound bag. ...
Jump to postThe more you stretch a design, the less effective the original control surfaces are in controlling the aircraft and the less stable it becomes. Strakes like the ones on the MD-80 family help add surface area and stability in the axis that may be lacking.

Jump to postIn my opinion, the strobes on the E-jets are too bright. They're terrible in low visibility. Jump to postIt's more of an issue for a pilot who may want to go work for a foreign carrier in a country that recognizes a foreign license (ie: China). Jump to postSince we're talking about my plane, I'll add in: Yes, the Ejets are notorious for landing "too soft". The worst part, it's very common when you're carrying higher speeds due to anti-ice being on or added gust factor in your approach speed. Not times you want to float. The landing gear system uses pr...
Jump to postAnother issue could have been they didn't force the numbers through ACARS with no flex on the engines. Depending on the carrier's program, it could be optimized to always try to do a reduced thrust take off, even at the expense of payload. Having not been there, it's hard to say.
Jump to postFlaps 1 speeds get pretty high in the 170/175. There were several times out of hot/high airports where one degree made a big difference in max takeoff weight. In most cases on the 170/175, it would be second segment climb limited or perhaps landing weight limited. Given the circumstances, I would sa...
