I've flown on both L-AA (32B) and L-US (321) and can't really say I've felt a difference in the seat cushions. According to seatguru.com the Airbus seats are 18" width versus 17.2" on the 738 fleet.

This was touched on earlier in the thread, was AA gains by switching to 787 for most of Europe is a huge gain in cargo capacity. From this site: http://www.anacargo.jp/en/int/service/aircraft/b787_8_1.html The 788 can hold up to 28 LD3 cans or up to 9 88" pallets (8 96"), with 97390 pounds...

And what happens if a family of four is top of the standby list but only one or two seats is available? Either split the family or they wait for the next flight. That accounts for some of the 20,000. And how many weren't in the gate area when called?

I'm going out on a limb here. Two things, weather at IAH looks pretty rough at the moment, and flight time to YYZ was 14:23. Normal flight DXB-IAH is just under 16 hours. I'm guessing YYZ was selected as a good place to refuel and prep for any holds getting into IAH if the crew can still be legal.

The 50 seat jets CASM is simply too high with $100/bbl oil. But fuel is only part of the equation.
