Here is a video explaining the operation of the nose cargo door on a 747. Compared to a passenger door it takes too long to open and close and there are extra procedures needed for its operation.

In the Airport History facebook page there is a picture of the TWA terminal at JFK. One of the 747's had jetways attached to the R1 and R2 doors and a third jetway that was stretched out next to the L1 door but not attached. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe any gates in Concourse C where UA is located are capable of handling widebodies. AC flies 767's into FLL on a regular basis.
