Okay so we have all done it but how many have done it starboard side?
SAA 747 at SID en route from JNB-JFK and JNB-ATL, I have done it a couple of times, it's quite an unusual feeling.
I would hope crew aren't expected to operate back to back red-eyes and rest during the day however I suspect that may be the case? SA had a similar long day on the ground in Europe as was already mentioned, many years ago the layover in London or Frankfurt was 4-5 days but more recently it was a on...Jump to post
SAA To be privatised. Has ANet ever had a discussion on what plane was the loudest? I vote for the 1-11 cause I never heard a Trident which had 3 Sprey's and a booster. VC-10 was up there, when I was in high school BA had a Sunday morning flight that would go out over my house near JNB, part of a round the world if I re...Jump to post
Actually no. Back before covid the route was a strong performer. Bologna and the surrounding areas are important business, technical and industrial areas. I have personally flown the route at least 3 X returns over the last few years, and in my experience the 77W always seemed pretty well filled up...Jump to post

Not a 744 but a 74L, SAA put a 74L into Rand airport for it's museum, runway is 4898ft According to the aerodrome chart, runway 11 is 1,579m (5,180ft) x 15m wide. I had a hernia repair and hydrocele at the same time some 15 years ago from which I recovered quite quickly, then several years later I was in for another procedure including a vasectomy and when I woke up the urologist told me that he had needed to do a hydrocele on the same side again. SAA all types, the first time in November 1972: -200 (including Helderberg), -300, -400, SP
British Airways -400 and also on the first RR RB-211 powered 747 in 1977
Lufthansa -400 and -8i
Not airline-specific but at DUR they announce "(flight number) a departure flight to XXX" which is just terrible English.
At the old ELS departures they used to ask departing passengers to "take their leave of friends and loved ones" which struck me as a bit morbid.
Concorde used to come to JNB for hot and high testing, I can recall several visits when I was in high school in the 70s and the plane roaring over the school (less than 2.5km from the north end of 03L) every half an hour. Regarding the ban on overflying Africa, SAA had stops in Abidjan, Ilha do Sal ...Jump to post

By the way, Lufthansa / Swiss seems to offer pretty cheap round flights from Johannesburg to Europe around those dates. They're cheaper than Emirates. EK quotes Vueling for BCN-BLQ so I checked their site, for the same flight, including checked baggage, it is EUR 80 per person. So, my question is, why are EK adding EUR 2,113 for a flight that costs 80 Euro? Does Emirates provide the cheapest, most basic ticket on Vueling, or the fully flexible &q...Jump to post
Sorry but need to disagree with you here. You know the rules of ID tickets-it's always standby. investing in a competently managed carrier like Conair. You mean Comair who are also in business rescue. That's quite a low blow considering the facts. Having a semi (or "artic" in UK English) stop, in an awkward place, with traffic backing up behind it, is absolutely going to be a real pain. I'm British, I know what an artic is.
