The Martin Mars allows access to the engines in the wing as well...must be four feet of space in there.
When touring at Sproat Lake a few years ago,, we were told that cylinders would be replaced if needed on the way to Guam when they were in their first life.

The E upgrades are only good on AC metal, and what your friend is doing should work I think (although check the details, because you never know). Overall, it does look the same as many trips I have taken where I have upgraded on the A C portions of the intinerary.

WS started this a couple of years ago to save fuel, but maybe the same thing could help high altitude airport operations.
