Looks like something happened when the pilot put the props into reverse with a subsequent loss of directional control. Lucky there were a bunch of trained people onboard who were able to quickly evac.

I flew 121 in Alaska and proceeded VFR on numerous occasion. We even had some VFR routes we could file under a VFR flight plan. Then again, things are done a little bit differently up there due to the remoteness of the state.

The speeds I'm familiar with are:

160 - close to best rate, which would be approx. V2
185 - a compromise for speed and climb rate in busy areas
210 - faster speed, okay climb rate
230 - cruise climb
