If you can afford one, I stronly recommend the Icom IC-R20. Fantastic scanner and has done me well for 2 years now and I can see it keep going for ages so a great piece of kit.

Line of sight is what you need. If you can position your aerial where you can see the aircraft then you'll see them on the radar screen. I myself have a SBS and love it.
