I’m surprised. By the initial reports I was expecting a high pressure turbine failure. But “just” a missing blade? We have all seen the containment tests, wonder if the containment isn’t as strong as advertised. Perhaps some kid of surge while the blade separated pushing it forward. Really weird.

I'm 6'5" and on some planes my knees impact the seat in front of me. Particularly bad on A320s where metal digs into my skin. I usually sit in the isle. In a crash situation both of my legs will probably break and I'll trap the outboard passengers. Fun. There are several ways the airline indust...
Jump to postJust curious if anyone knows why ual 854 did a bunch of orbits over the Gulf of Mexico and then returned to IAH today.
Jump to postWas there any icing in the area when this happened? I've seen ice before in thunderstorms but usually it's not much.

Jump to postI know you really want to experiment with new airlines. If you company was smart it would put you on the delta atl-jnb flight. It's the "quickest" way there and you won't show up feeling like garbage for a week- just a few days instead.

Jump to postJust a curious question- in the soundcloud recording of the ATC when speedbird transmits you can hear several alarms in the background. Are they fire or master warning?
Jump to postI think it's because air travel has become a commodity product. You would need to come up with something mind blowing to beat this fact. In the end it's a bunch of companies with very similar products operating in the same regulatory conditions and in that case only the largest do well. To create a ...

Jump to postWell I can see either a bomb or super rapid fire causing the comms issue (one in a million comms issue). Pilots programmed a turn back and the plane did as was required. Jump to postAs for the sonar search I can shed some light into how past searches were done. Twa 800 might be the most similar - of course there was a very good idea on where the plane went in.
