Re: Trump announces plan to privatize Air Traffic Control

Anybody who thinks that a private entity is going to sink billions into improvements is a damn fool. In the US, private entities cut costs to improve margins above all else. I'm not looking forward to seeing an ATC system that is run by the best controllers that $10 per hour with zero benefits can b...

I saw that too. Very sad. An FO would be reasonably young I would imagine. Not necessarily. There's a number of factors that go into it, but it depends on where he was domiciled, where he fell on the seniority list, when he was hired, what his personal preferences are in terms of aircraft, etc. He ...

The AWOS at AWK was recording 134kts gusting to 165kts when Typhoon Ioke hit in 2006. Nobody's sure if it got worse than that because that's when it quit reporting after the storm took out all of the comms (and the AWOS as well). Hey, you said not a tornado, nothing about a typhoon :D

I'm assuming the jet has been fixed, as there is a flight plan filed from AWK-TPE for a CI 2017, A330-300 leaving 0510Z 12/14 (1710 local for AWK). At least there wasn't an engine swap required this time around!

Did they let the people off before the charter plane came? If I remember correctly, the people on the Delta 747 stayed on board for something like 18 hours since the plane had more facilities and seats than the buildings at the airport. The DL 747 was at Midway, (broken windshield) and it was becau...

I've seen them parked on the ramp at ELP. It does get cold there overnight, mostly due to the fact that it's at nearly 4000' elevation, but I've never seen them in use. Snow is pretty rare.

Any chance it could have to do with the operator and where they're located at your local airport? Reason I ask is at KELP AA (the only MD-80 operator) is located in the A terminal which sits at the ends of both runways, whereas the other operators are in B and making a turn off before the end is a m...

Perhaps they should barrel-roll SQ's first A380 when they send it to the scrapper... First you'd have to find an A380 crew willing to risk their career. Just anecdotally, I can say that when I was routinely flying as a passenger between DFW and HNL, the westbound always took longer than the eastbound, by somewhere between 30 and 60 minutes depending on time of year as I recall. The end of 4/22 (using an extended centerline on Google Maps) at ELP is 3.95 miles out from the Mexican border. Usually winds favor 22 so not a big deal for approaches, but you make a pretty quick left turn if making a 22 departure, presumably to stay within US airspace. CJS, on the other side of th...
