You'll be fine as long as you check-in as soon as it is possible. Likewise, if you regularly check the seatmap on the BA website you'll be able to gauge how quickly the flight fills up and make a decision closer to the time.

Then yes, that sounds possible. At least you're covered if you miss it- there is a flight connections channel at LCY and AFAIK there is no reason why you couldn't use it.

Interestingly, I made a booking on Expedia last year for a flight on Lufthansa/Swiss. When I was booking on Expedia, I gave my preferred seating preferences- to my surprise they were carried forward and I was given seat assignments at the time of booking. These were viewable/amendable on the airline...
