There's a lot of confusion outside the aviation press on this point, and many are touting it as a failure of automation. Boeing is still using automation successfully, some of which was newly introduced on wings. It's just this one area where they had the issue.

The photo at this link (and in the press release) shows the 787-9 in Lufthansa, Austrian, and Swiss colors. What is it about FX and 5X that requires this sort of fleet? I mean to say, why is this sort of parcel traffic not as apparently common in Europe? Sure, they have DHL, and some UPS and FedEx presence, but the business model in Europe (and surrounding areas) just seems so different.

Okay, I know this will not actually happen, so no lectures please.

The first-gen A330 and A340 shared the same wing, with the difference being that two of the engine mounts were not used on the A330. Does the A330neo still have any vestigial remnants of this feature?
