Re: Leeham News: An exclusive Boeing operator is in talks for A220 and A321neo

I'm not sure Air Europa would have the authority to place an order currently, considering the IAG takeover is still progressing to the best of my knowledge. So this leaves relatively few options - depending on the definition of Europe I agree with other posters that LOT is a strong contender, and UI...

Re: Scheduled airline service to strictly military use bases

In the UK, you will soon be able to fly into RAF Valley (HLY) with Eastern Airways. This operates as the Welsh airlink from Cardiff which had been paused due to Covid and airline failures. And also in the UK, Newquay Airport (NQY) saw flights for decades whilst classed as RAF St Mawgan. The military...

If you allow train rides in between, probably mine, from 2000, would look like this: 1 KBP-SVO on VV (Aerosvit) 2 SVO-OMS on SU (Aeroflot) (a train ride inbetween) 3 BAX-KJA on 5M (Sibaviatrans) 4 KJA-DME on 7B (KrasAir) 5 SVO-KBP on UN (Transaero) There must have been something before an after, so...

Re: Why has Emirates decided not to fly to Nepal even tho they fly to so many South Asian destinations?

As I understand it, part of the issue is the strength of KTM's runway. Using the ACN / PCN method, the runway at KTM has a PCN assessed as 54 FAYT - the 77W meanwhile has an ACN of 64*. Sure, an EK 77W is unlikely to be going out at MTOW, but that's still a reasonable discrepancy. For comparison, th...

Re: How many airports did you fly from around your place of residence?

Growing up in the West Country (near Plymouth), before BRS became a large hub for LCCs, I was used to long overland trips to reach an airport. At the most extreme, LHR was 4-5 hours by road and LTN / LGW / STN 5-6 hours. Some 'fun' childhood memories there, airports reached overland from that region...

Re: Airports with separate landside buildings for ticketing and baggage claim

This was pretty common with airports in Ukraine and I think other parts of the former Soviet Union. I'm guessing because the large 'modern' (ha!) baggage belts would not fit easily inside many of the historic railway style terminal buildings, so new annexes were built to accommodate the arrivals. It...

Re: Surprising aircraft served

In the late 1980s Air India operated a leased Il-62M for their services to SVO and I believe TAS.

Similarly Air France, KLM and JAL had a wet-lease arrangement with Aeroflot, co-operating Il-62Ms. IIRC it was basically an early form of code-share to allow access to Russian airspace for overflights.

Re: Has anyone here flown on a Boeing 720?

Yes, with Air Malta, and I remember absolutely nothing of it. Apparently I screamed both ways for most of the flight - in my defence I was about 10 months old!

Re: Any airliners you boarded by means of mobile airstairs?

Yes, probably 100+ types, the largest being the 747-400.

My educated guess would put my stats as follows:

Airbridge: 25%
Integral Airstairs: 25%
Mobile Steps: 45%
None Needed: 5%

The latter applies to the really small stuff like GA or Islanders where you just step up into them.

Dan :)
