It may go a long way in explaing why the 717 was dicontinued while the E190 got a big order from Jet Blue and is poised to become the only game in town in the 100-seat aircraft market.

The biggest difference I see was that people seemed genuinely upset when Eastern folded, and they are still fondly remembered as are Pan Am and TWA.
