Absolutely ask your doctor about DVT (deep vein thrombosis aka bloot clot) prevention. I lost a professor colleague to that in a similar situation to yours.

Forced to be ambidextrous by a malformation of my left hand, I am naturally a lefty. This sometimes causes problems when I have to make a split-second decision - I've been known to walk into doors with both hands partially raised because my brain can't figure out which hand to use for the knob.
