It purely to stop last minute bookings to UK/Europe while LHR is pax numbers restricted. Existing ticket holders won't be affected and you can still book connections to mid/long haul destinations.

There's a metro/automated people mover between the terminals and car parks. No airside transfer on two different tickets that I'm aware of though there may be, follow any flight connections signs if you see them.

Can't remember the last time I flicked through an inflight mag, leave alone actually read anything in it. Likely costs more in fuel to lug them around than the ad revenue they generate (the reason there's no point trying to read them).

The FIR boundaries don't automatically correlate directly with national boundaries. The flights are operated in international airspace and they are in contact with the relevant ATC units throughout.
