Actually per space the original ac hanger can hold more planes at once, during the strike in 98 air Canada put 7 planes into their hanger in yvr. Max for the content hanger in one spot is 5. But yes using the whole cp hanger you can put a more aircraft

the air frame design may be 40 years old but even the dc-9-30's were relatively fuel efficient up to the mid 2000's. The B717 has new engines, new computer systems.

Well instead of waiting for more aircraft (they needed them right then) and being right after 9/11 they made a deal with Air Canada to Wet Lease...

the landing gear and the Tail would have needed re-designing, just look at the tail of the non-stretched DC-8's they look too big for the size of aircraft, Douglas did that in mind of future stretches of the aircraft

Boeing's site says the N777LR can auto take off but only uses the Flight director (the computer that moves the surfaces), but i believe no country allows that yet.
