Simple... the outer engines overhang on turf or other material (off the runway). Reversing there would stir things up and cause debris to be ingested into the engines. So they don't do it.

I also heard on MSNBC that the runway did not yet have the rain groves in it, which help clear rain water and increase traction. Interesting facts. Still too early to say if all of this is true or not. But nonetheless, it is tragic.
