Re: Feasibility of Replacing the Ice Crossings/Ferries on Dempster Highway

Just because I'm bored... The bridge itself is prone to high winds in winter. And the roads leading to the bridge are very close to the river and have flooded in spring. Until 2015 the old ferry was kept on standby during spring. It is no longer serviceable. The further north you go on the Mackenzie...

Re: Feasibility of Replacing the Ice Crossings/Ferries on Dempster Highway

Yellowknife is the biggest settlement above the 60 in Canada... That bridge has been planned for years, still had a large cost overrun and has had to be closed more than once. The Mac is much narrower there, deeper and less prone the ice dams. Much busier highway also. Used to be a ferry from Hay Ri...

Re: Feasibility of Replacing the Ice Crossings/Ferries on Dempster Highway

The costs are astronomical for the amount of traffic. The Mackenzie river especially has a very wide flood plain and very difficult spring ice break up that often causes massive flooding. Building a bridge for a highway that is not even mostly paved in such conditions is not high on anyone's priorit...

I have to wonder if de Havilland would consider re-engining the Q300, as there is a market for turboprops in the 50-seat class and right now, ATR would be unchallenged there. Re-engine with what through? The PW123 on the DH83 and the PW127M on the ATR -600s are still basically the same engine... th...

It wasn't that long ago that the Q400 and the ATR were actual competitors, but in the past few years ATR just left them in the dust. It feels like the Q400 got lost in the shuffle during the whole Bombardier restructuring/selloff. BBD was not exactly doing well either with Q400 sales for a few year...
