Major carriers operated DC-10 and L-1011 into KLGA for 20 years or more....runways about 7000 ft. KORD 27R is about the same length....observed 777s landing on it all the time. Of course, these runways all have full ILS and visual approach guidance.

Check flightstats.com for current daily cancellations figures. People may be surprised at the large number of cancels. This will go on through October. ATC may have led the airlines down the garden path on this one. Expect a GDP every day when the weather is not perfect for the complex LAHSO ops.
