What you are seeing is a "vortex" being driven off the high amount of air being sucked into the engine... Oftentimes you will see this from the ground after a rainstorm... other times it is formed by rapid condensation.

Keep in mind, Economy Plus is saved for United's Elite Travellers on a first come / first serve basis. That extra space is another reason many travellers who have United as an option for their travels choose them.

Better yet, the airlines should just require that all but the most expensive tickets are "Non-Refundable" and failing to check-in by the check-in deadline forfeits the ticket.

No residual value, no charge for confirming space on another flight, zilch. Just like a ticket to a Baseball game.

Right of Way? Maybe as far as priority with ATC Controllers, but when aircraft are hurtling thru the skies issues such as this should already be figured out. Either the Gulf Air flight or the other aircraft were at the wrong altitude or wrong track or the ATC responsible for the sector screwed up.

AirTran...just like Northwest...will only book you on a competitors flight if they have no option of confirming you on their own carrier.

They will not go to an additional expense to fly you on another airline - especially during delays which are outside of their control. (ie weather, ATC delays)
