Looks like they took off and immediately circled over the Mediterranean for around 20 minutes before landing back at TLV around 1am Israeli time. Anyone know what happened?

Biggest winners here are Israeli airlines which save not just fuel but HOURS in the air on eastbound routes. This also opens up new southbound lanes on their Africa routes. This is also the first time TLV has a chance of becoming a transit hub for LY. Interesting times.

Not sure if they currently have any in this configuration, but I flew on an El Al 744 around 2001-2003 with all-coach seating. LOTS of people, although it was nice to be able to roam the aircraft freely and go up and down the stairs!

I think Boeing is trying to draw a comparison between it's two new birds by having the number 8 appear prominently in both. This also gives it the ability to move into 8's when there are no more 7-slots to fill (I.e., post the 797).
