Those were the days when you could count on there being a major airline crash every 18 months or so. It's amazing how much airline safety has improved since then.

I'm an unhappy AAdvantage member as the program sucks (at least from the West Coast). I'm going to use up my points and then switch to a carrier that is more interested in providing value to its customers.

I've looked around on the inter-webs but don't see much solid evidence that evacuation was slowed by passengers trying to get their luggage/bags. I see that some folks had bags on their shoulders as they were photographed walking away, but that seems like slim evidence of any material delay. Perhaps...

And yet, at least in the case of Lion Air, it appears to be a huge contributor. If it took a jump seat pilot to teach the crew how to turn off the Stab Trim, which they ALL should have known by memory, then that's almost criminal incompetence. Or maybe the crew of the crash flight didn't "turn...

Without crunching numbers and just looking at a map one can readily see that DL's hubs are spread out much more effectively across the continent. If he was turning to land where the accident occurred then he was very close to the runway threshold but relatively far from the centerline. Thus the pilot may have been trying to lose altitude with a countercontrol skid and unfortunately entered into an unrecoverable stall spin.
