What hasn't been stated is whether any flight that these two were due to crew back to London was delayed or cancelled. To deadhead a standby crew to JNB is going to take time, and as BA flies the A380 on London to Jo'burg, thats a lot of people to disrupt or find hotels for. It's not hard to see why...
