Also on another note, as it seems there were later departures in the 1990s, it would be safe to assume that there was more flexibility with aircraft utilization years ago, Whereas these days all VS long haul leave the LGW operation by early afternoon.

So lets say for example a US A330 used to spend 4:30-5 hours on the ground at Gatwick, would they have left at the gate for that long or towed it to a remote stand to let other airlines use that gate?

Is there more flexibility these days at Heathrow with Departure and Arrival times? Why were American and United the only US carriers allowed to fly from Heathrow? Also would the other American carriers preferred Heathrow to Gatwick if the agreement wasn't present back in years gone by?
