If you lose one engine, I don’t think you can safely assume that the other engine (or engines) will keep running long enough to reach safety. I just had a thought.

If the aircraft was hijacked, and the transponders and ACARS were all turned off, then it's likely that the circuit breakers for the data recorder and the voice recorder would have been pulled as well.

I believe the A318 was originally developed as a regional jet, but there were some FAA and European regulations that classified it as a mainline jet instead, so that killed much of the interest in the A318.
