Cold weather operations for turbine engines is really no issue at all but with the old reciprocating engines, it was a major challenge, especially below zero degrees Fahrenheit.

Very annoyed that the price of motor oil is still the same as it was in late summer when crude oil was going for $145/bbl. Then in August I paid $2.88 for a qt. of pennzoil 10W-30. Actually the loudest ever probably would be the XB-70 for a jet engined AC. I have read that the XF-84H was so loud that people close to it including the pilot would get sick and vomit.

Mainly the reason that the MD-90 including the MD-95 (717)"failed" was because Boeing bought McDonnell Douglas in 1997 and did not want it to compete with the 737 line.

I guess that this would expain why the foam breaking off seems like a "new" problem. How many missions did NASA have before the foam problem caused this much trouble. About 112 missions other than the two shuttle disasters, I can't recall much trouble with foam hitting the tiles till recently.

I am trying to find out how many freight carriers are still using DC-8s. Not finding much info on the web either. I know that UPS, Airborne and others still use them. I was mainly curious who was still using the -50 or -60 series aircraft. Any input would be appreciated.

Also, a fanjet makes much less noise than a turbojet; this was a BIG deal in the early 1960s, probably more so than fuel efficiency.

B-52 Airframe Life

I have read that the B-52 will possibly fly for another 30yrs or so. I was wondering how much airframe life is left in the 52. I thought boeing designed the plane for approx 10,000hrs (unsure of the cycle life). Anyone know how many sorties a B-52 accumulates annually?

There is no way possible to take off with only one engine running. The thrust to weight ratio would prevent it from ever flying.

-200 series had a higher bypass ratio and a exhaust mixer that mixes the cooler bypass air with the hot core gases.

The JT8D-200 series are still what I would call noisy.
