Why the 777-200LR and not the -200ER? The LR has very limited feedstock. I'm fairly sure that the only LRs available are the ten ex-DL ones, with the ex-AI/EY ones being scrapped a while back. Loads of -200ER is feedstock available.

One of the Lufthansa aircraft that diverted there was the nearly new Airbus A340-300 D-AIFC. Lufthansa later named it "Gander/Halifax" in honor of the kind hospitality provided to the passengers and crew by the locals.

D-AIFC is still flying for Lufthansa today.
